11 Common Symptoms of Early Pregnancy


Becoming a mom is one of the most joyous occasions in life. But before you get to the stage of rocking a new baby to sleep, you have to first make it through pregnancy. For some women, pregnancy is easy breezy. But for others, it can be a real nightmare— complete with all sorts of unpleasant symptoms. Here are 11 early pregnancy symptoms that no one tells you about.


1. Fatigue


One symptom of early pregnancy that no one tells you about is fatigue. You might find yourself feeling more tired than usual, even if you’re getting a full night’s sleep. This fatigue is caused by the high levels of progesterone in your body and will likely fade as your pregnancy progresses. In the meantime, take naps when you can and try to get to bed a little earlier at night.


2. Nausea & vomiting


Another early pregnancy symptom is nausea, also called “morning sickness.” Nausea usually starts around week 6 of pregnancy and can come and go throughout the day (hence the name). For some women, nausea is just a mild annoyance. But for others, it can be so severe that it leads to vomiting and weight loss. If you’re struggling with nausea, try eating small meals throughout the day instead of three large ones. And avoid triggering foods like fried or greasy dishes.

4. Missed Period


Missed period is one of the tell-tale signs associated with early pregnancy. Many women don’t experience any additional symptoms in the beginning. However, missed period is usually the first warning sign and should be taken seriously. It is important to do a pregnancy test to determine if missed period is indeed related to early pregnancy and get appropriate medical advice as soon as possible. During this daunting time, remember that missed period doesn’t always point towards pregnancy, and many other factors such as hormonal imbalance or stress can also cause missed periods rather than pregnancy.


5. Breast tenderness


Around weeks 4 to 6, you might notice your breasts becoming increasingly tender and sensitive to touch— another sign of early pregnancy thanks to those pesky hormones again! To help ease the discomfort, wear a supportive bra and avoid hot showers or baths.


6. Bloating


Another common but lesser-known symptom of early pregnancy is bloating. You might find yourself feeling fuller than usual or gassier than usual starting around week 6 due to rising hormone levels. Though this symptom is usually just temporary, it can be quite uncomfortable. Try eating smaller meals throughout the day, avoiding spicy foods, and drinking plenty of water to help ease the discomfort.


7. Mood swings


In early pregnancy mood swings are surprisingly common, and if you’re noticing your own emotional reactions fluctuate more than usual, rest assured that it’s not just all in your head. Mood swings can be caused by significant hormonal changes, fatigue, dizziness and nausea.

You may find yourself feeling overwhelmed and unusually sensitive or irritable – understandably, pregnancy can be stressful! If you’ve found these symptoms to be bothersome, do seek the advice of your doctor to address any underlying issues that may need extra support to monitor. Mood swings during the first trimester often ease off as hormones begin to settle.


8. Spotting


Spotting is one of the earliest symptoms of pregnancy, and it can happen before you even miss your first period. It’s usually a light spotting that lasts for a day or two, and it’s often brown or pink in colour. Spotting can happen when the embryo implants in the uterus, which is usually about 10 days after ovulation. If you’re spotting and think you might be pregnant, take a home pregnancy test to be sure.


9. Frequent urination


If you find yourself needing to use the restroom more frequently than usual, it could be a sign that you’re pregnant. As your uterus grows during pregnancy, it puts pressure on your bladder, causing you to feel the need to urinate more often than normal.


10. Dizziness

It is often caused by the increased blood flow and hormone levels during pregnancy. dizziness can also be caused by low blood sugar, dehydration, or anemia. If you are dizzy during pregnancy, be sure to drink plenty of fluids and eat small meals throughout the day. dizziness should go away after a few weeks of pregnancy. Changes in appetite is a common early pregnancy symptom among many expecting mothers during early pregnancy. In fact, it’s estimated that up to 80 percent of moms-to-be experience an increase or decrease in cravings for certain foods or just having a heightened appetite overall. Changes in appetite may come and go throughout your pregnancy as your body takes on the additional strain of growing and nourishing a tiny human!
